Every organizer has asked the same question the week before an event: will 24 teams on three courts actually finish before the venue closes? Guessing leads to overrun days, finals cut short and teams waiting around for hours. The number of matches and rounds is fixed by the format, so it can be worked out in advance instead of discovered on the day.

The tool counts matches from the format (a single elimination bracket always has one fewer match than entries; double elimination roughly doubles that), works out how many rounds must be played one after another, then compares two limits: the rounds that cannot overlap, and the total court time spread across your courts. The longer of the two is the estimate. It does not account for delays, weather or teams arriving late, so treat it as a floor, not a promise.

How to use this tool

  1. Enter how many teams or players are entered and pick the elimination format you plan to run.
  2. Enter the courts, fields or tables you can run at once, then a realistic match length and changeover time.
  3. Read the total matches, rounds and byes, then compare the estimated hours against your venue booking and add your own margin for delays.

What the math assumes

  • Single elimination needs exactly one fewer match than the number of entries; double elimination needs 2n minus 2 matches, plus one more if the if-necessary final is played.
  • Rounds are counted along the longest chain of matches that must be played one after another; in double elimination that chain runs through the losers bracket.
  • Byes are the empty slots needed to bring the field up to the next power of two, and all of them are placed in round one.
  • Playing time is the larger of two limits: back to back rounds times the slot length, or total match minutes divided evenly across your courts. Real schedules run longer because later matches wait on results from earlier ones.
  • Every match uses the same slot length (match minutes plus changeover) and no time is added for delays, meal breaks or late arrivals.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the estimate shorter than my last tournament actually took?

The tool assumes every court is busy whenever a match is ready and nobody runs late. Real days lose time to late arrivals, disputes and matches that run long. Look at how far your past events ran over their plan and add that margin on top.

How do byes affect the schedule?

A bye means an entry skips round one, so round one has fewer real matches than slots. The total match count already accounts for that: a 24 team single elimination bracket still plays 23 matches.

Does the tool cover pool play before the bracket?

No. Add pool games separately: each pool of four teams plays six games in a round robin. Our article on pool play explains when that format is worth the extra court time.

Can I use this for a round robin or Swiss format?

Not directly. Round robin match counts grow much faster (n times n minus 1, divided by 2). This calculator covers single and double elimination brackets only.
