On a busy tournament day the bracket desk does two jobs: writing results onto the wall bracket and answering the same question from players and parents every few minutes, who plays next and on which court. Both jobs scale with the number of matches, and both quietly consume the volunteer or staff hours you budgeted for the day.

The calculator multiplies your match count by the minutes each result takes to record on paper versus on a phone, then adds the minutes spent answering schedule questions and removes the share you expect a shared live link to eliminate. The result is hours saved per event and what those hours are worth at your staff rate. Every number is yours; the tool ships with placeholder defaults you should replace with what you actually observe at the desk.

What the math assumes

Every match takes the same number of minutes to record, and both the paper and live figures include collecting the score from the court.
Schedule questions scale with the number of matches; the percentage you enter is your own estimate of how many people will check a shared link instead of asking the desk.
Hours saved are converted to dollars at the rate you enter; volunteer time has a value too, so enter what you would pay to replace it, or 0 to see hours only.
The estimate covers one event and does not include the cost of any bracket software; multiply by events per season for an annual figure.
Results are not clamped: if entering scores on a device takes longer than paper at your event, hours saved will show as negative.

Frequently asked questions

Where do the default minutes come from?

They are placeholders, not measurements. Time three or four results at your own desk with a stopwatch and enter what you see; the tool is only as accurate as your inputs.

Does this include the subscription cost of bracket software?

No. Compare the labor value saved against whatever you pay for software, or against a free tier, to judge whether it is worth it for your event size.

What if my volunteers are unpaid?

Their time still has a value: it is the hours they could spend running concessions, checking in teams or watching their own kids play. Enter what you would pay to replace them, or 0 to see hours only.

How do I count matches for a double elimination event?

Use 2n minus 2 matches for n teams, plus one if the if-necessary final is played. Our bracket match count calculator works this out for you.
